“Aha!” is the sound of power coming into your grasp. It is the power of discovering something about yourself or a situation – the staying power it has, the empowerment that comes from stumbling onto something you instinctively know is true.
As a hypnotherapist, I use caution not to lead people to an answer or understanding. I hold space for my client in a relaxing environment while they report out their experience. “Take a step back and tell me what else you notice.” “What do you know to be true about your experience.”
One client had been going for psychotherapy for years and simply could not move past her divorce. The separation came as a surprise to her after 25 years of marriage – and that was ten years earlier. On her journey she found herself standing in a river desperately trying to move the boulder out of the way. She reported facing upstream and struggling. Through her own curiosity she was able to determine that the boulder represented her ex-husband and she was trying to move it back in time, to change things. I asked her what happened if she turned around and faced downstream and she began giggling and clapping saying “now I’m in the flow. I’ve been trying to change the past. I like the future better.” Anyone could have told her that. In fact, her therapist probably tried many times to help her see it. But it wasn’t until she was firmly in charge of the discovery – the imagery and the meaning – that she found the solution.
